Measure the shin, not the child

Two children the same height can need different guards, because leg proportions differ. A tall child with a short lower leg in a guard chosen from a height chart will find the top edge fouling the kneecap every time they bend, which is uncomfortable enough that they will start wearing the guard low — which defeats it.

Why oversized guards protect less, not more

Strapped guards with ankle protection hold position more reliably and suit younger or newer players, at some cost in weight and freedom.

A stretched-out sleeve is a frequent culprit and an easy thing to miss, because it looks identical to a new one. Sleeves lose elasticity over a season, and a guard that stayed put in September can wander by March with no change in size. Check the sleeve's grip before concluding the guard is wrong.

The sprint test
