Tennis Gear Size Guide for Kids

Tennis racket sizing is age- and height-based, with lengths ranging from 19 inches for the youngest beginners up to 27 inches for teens. Getting the right length makes a real difference in swing control — a racket that's too long is harder to swing correctly and discourages new players. Most beginner programs also use modified balls (red, orange, green dot) that match the court size and racket length.

FAQ

How do I know if a tennis racket is the right length?

Stand the racket upright next to your child with the handle on the ground. A good starting length puts the racket head somewhere between the hip and waist. A racket that reaches past the belly button is usually too long for a beginner.

Do junior players need special tennis balls?

Most beginner programs use red, orange, or green-dot transition balls that are slower and lower-bouncing than yellow balls. Confirm which ball your child's program uses before buying rackets or extra balls.

Can my child use an adult racket if I choke up on the grip?

Usually no. Adult rackets are heavier and longer than junior players can control comfortably, which leads to bad swing habits and frustration. Junior rackets are scaled in length, weight, and grip size.
