Speedo Kids Swim Sizing: Goggles, Caps, and Fins

Swim goggles are the one piece of kit where a chart genuinely cannot help you much, because the fit variable is the shape of your child's face. Speedo's junior range is designed around younger face shapes and is generally marketed for roughly ages six to fourteen, but two children of the same age can have completely different eye-socket depths and nose-bridge widths.

The test that works takes ten seconds and can be done in the store. Hold the goggles against your child's eyes with the strap hanging loose, press gently, and let go. If the cups hold a brief suction on their own, the frame shape matches the face. If they fall away immediately or leak air on one side, no amount of strap tension will fix it — that frame is wrong for that face.

The most common goggle mistake parents make is responding to leaks by tightening the strap. A strap that has to be painful to stop water is compensating for cups that do not match the face, and over-tightening creates deep pressure rings, headaches, and a child who resents wearing goggles at all.

If the goggles leak on one side only, look at the nose bridge first — that asymmetry usually means the bridge is spacing the cups wrongly for your child's face. Some Speedo models use interchangeable or adjustable nose bridges specifically to solve this. If the goggles leak everywhere despite a reasonable strap tension, the gasket may simply be worn out; chlorine degrades silicone over a season or two and an old pair can leak purely from age.

Swim caps do not seal water out — that is not what they are for. They reduce drag, keep hair out of the face and the pool filters, and in some programs identify swim groups by colour. The variable that decides which cap works is hair volume, not age.

Silicone caps are thicker, more durable, and easier to pull on over longer hair, which makes them the usual choice for children with more hair. Latex caps are thinner and cheaper but tear more readily and are unsuitable for anyone with a latex allergy. Lycra caps are the most comfortable and the least hydrodynamic, and are a reasonable choice for recreational swimmers who just want hair controlled. For long or thick hair, a child-sized silicone cap in the larger of two options is usually the right call.

Training fins follow shoe size, and Speedo publishes size ranges per model rather than a single universal chart. Ranges typically span two or three shoe sizes per fin size, which means a child near a boundary can go either way and should try both if possible.

Fit matters more than it looks. A fin that is loose will lift at the heel and blister the Achilles over a long set, and a fin that is too tight causes foot cramps. If your child's programme specifies short blade training fins, do not substitute long recreational snorkelling fins — they load the ankles differently and are not what the coach is asking for. Check with the coach before buying, since many squads specify a fin type.
