Riddell Youth Football Helmet Sizing: Parent Measurement Guide

Football helmet sizing starts and ends with head circumference, and the measurement is easy to get wrong. Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the skull, roughly one inch above the eyebrows and above the ears, and keep the tape level all the way around. Hair matters: measure with the hair as it will be on game day, because a thick braid or a bun taken out between fitting and the first practice changes the number.

Age-based helmet sizing is the mistake that causes the most trouble. Two ten-year-olds on the same team can measure into different helmet sizes, and a helmet chosen from an age bracket rather than a tape measure is a guess on the single most safety-critical piece of equipment your child will wear.

The SpeedFlex Youth ranges above are Riddell's published figures for that helmet. They do not transfer to Riddell's other youth shells, and they certainly do not transfer to Schutt or Xenith. Shell geometry, foam depth, and the adjustment mechanism all differ, so the same 21-inch head can land in different labeled sizes across models.

This is why the buying sequence matters more than the number. Decide on the specific model first, then pull that model's chart, then measure, then fit. Parents who measure once and then shop by size label across brands end up with a helmet that matches a number but not a head.

NOCSAE's youth-specific football helmet standard, which Riddell's ND6 line addresses, tightened the performance requirements for helmets intended for younger players. For parents the practical consequences are about timing and about the second-hand market rather than about measuring.

New youth helmets sold now are built to the current standard. Older helmets still in circulation — including hand-me-downs and clearance stock — may have been certified under a previous standard, and reconditioning does not upgrade a helmet to a newer standard. If you are handed a helmet from a program's equipment room, ask what it is certified to and when it was last reconditioned before you accept it.

Once the helmet is on and adjusted, run the physical checks. The helmet should sit level with the facemask about three finger-widths above the nose. With the chin strap fastened, the skin of the forehead should move with the helmet when you rotate it, not slide underneath it. The player should nod and shake vigorously without the helmet shifting, and the ear holes should line up with the ears.

If the helmet passes the chart but fails these checks, the checks win. For a protective product worn in contact, an in-person verification by a coach, equipment manager, or certified fitter is worth the trip even when the measurement seems unambiguous.
