Why Bauer skates are not your child's shoe size
The single most common Bauer sizing mistake is buying skates in the child's shoe size. Hockey skates are built to hold the foot still inside a stiff boot, so they are sized to the actual foot length rather than to the roomy last a sneaker uses. In practice this means most players start roughly one to one and a half sizes below their US shoe size, with senior skates typically sitting about a size and a half down and youth and junior skates closer to a full size down.
That conversion is a starting point for which box to pull off the shelf, not an answer. Two children with the same foot length can need different skates because the shape of the foot differs. The reliable check is physical: with the skate unlaced, the child slides their foot forward until the toes touch the toe cap, and you should be able to fit about one finger behind the heel. Once laced, the heel should lock into the pocket with the toes just brushing the cap — not curled, not floating.

The Fit 1, Fit 2, and Fit 3 system explained
Modern Bauer skates are sold in three volume profiles rather than traditional width letters, and this is the part of the chart that confuses parents most. The profiles come from Bauer's Performance Fit System, which the company built on a library of hundreds of thousands of foot scans. Length picks the number; the fit profile picks the shape around it.
Fit 1 is the low-volume, narrow profile — a shallow heel, a low instep, and a narrow forefoot. Fit 2 is the medium profile and fits the largest share of players. Fit 3 is the high-volume, wide profile for a deep heel, a tall instep, and a broad forefoot. Bauer's own scan data puts roughly 44% of players in Fit 2, about 37% in Fit 1, and about 19% in Fit 3, which is why a store that only stocks Fit 2 will still fit most kids but will leave some children in a skate that never feels right no matter how hard it is laced.
If your child's skates always feel loose across the top of the foot even when fully tightened, or if the sides of the forefoot ache after twenty minutes, the problem is usually volume rather than length. Changing fit profile is often the fix that changing size will not deliver.
Every Bauer category uses a different measurement
There is no universal Bauer size. A player can be a Junior 4.0 Fit 2 in skates, a size Small in a helmet, an 11-inch glove, and a Junior Large in shin guards, all at the same time. Parents run into trouble when they carry one number across categories.
Helmets are sized by head circumference measured with a soft tape above the eyebrows and around the widest part of the skull, and Bauer states plainly that helmet fit varies by model — so the chart for the specific helmet you are buying is the one that counts. Gloves are measured in inches from the heel of the palm to the fingertip, and the number you want is the one that closes the gap between the glove cuff and the elbow pad. Shoulder, elbow, and shin protective is sized by height and weight bands, then confirmed by coverage: shin guards should reach from just under the kneecap to the top of the skate boot.
Where the Bauer chart will not help you
A size chart cannot tell you whether a skate has been baked, whether a used helmet is still within its certification window, or whether a stick has been cut. Those are the decisions that cause the most regret in youth hockey, and none of them appear on a sizing page.
Helmets in particular deserve caution. A used Bauer helmet may be the correct circumference and still be the wrong purchase if you cannot verify its age or impact history. Sticks are the opposite problem: cutting a stick down to fit a shorter player stiffens it, so a junior stick trimmed several inches can end up playing far stiffer than the flex number printed on it.
